It has been difficult to find anything to appreciate about this cold, cruel winter. But thousands are trying by flocking to the Lake Superior shore to experience the ice caves of Bayfield County.
NDL official real photographer Sam Plasch ventured out across several miles of 18" thick ice to capture these beautiful images and has graciously agreed to share them with those of us not able or intrepid enough to make the trip ourselves.
Fantastic!

Xbox to you today, dearest Laura!!!!
Wow, gorgeous! Does this happen regularly or is it special this year?
WOW. GReat PHOTOS!
Shaundra, I believe the ice caves form most years, but the ice isn't always thick enough to support foot traffic out to see them. The last time was 2009. In the summer a popular activity is kayaking to see the caves.
This just in....our meteorological winter, December, January, February has tied for coldest ever in our area with the winter of 1903-1904. The average temp for those three months was 7.5 degrees Fahrenheit. So ...it wasn't just our imagination making us whine, dash quickly from shelter to shelter, shake our fists at Boreas, and huddle indoors next to our space heaters. It truly has been miserable.
Our local paper featured these ice caves yesterday. Headline: Ice cave brings crowds to Wisconsin's Apostle Islands
The two photos included do not rival Sams!
